Is Your External Hard Drive Spinning-Up?

If on plugging your external hard drive into your computer you find that there is no access to the drive, then in the first instance place a finger lightly on the external chassis of the hard drive. Can you feel a steady vibration caused by a the disk platters spinning? If there is no vibration, or perhaps alternatively a short pulse repeated every 1 to 2 seconds (often accompanied by a high frequency squeak or beep) then there is a very high likelihood that the hard drive read/write heads have crashed into the disk platters and are preventing those same platters from spinning up. RAID Recovery is Awkward

One of the truisms of the data recovery business is that you cannot recover data that has been overwritten. One of the things that makes RAID recovery so awkward is that the presence of parity blocks and a variable pattern, which is vendor-specific within the rules of any given RAID level, is that it can be hard to tell when a given set of similar data blocks are the original, or a parity block or a temporary corruption. The role of the recovery expert is to create system wide rules which apply universally, but in failed RAID systems, this has to be augmented with patching specific areas that do not quite meet these rules. This happens because RAID failure is outside the normal operating scope, so general assumptions do not apply. You cannot look at a single member drive, confirm the first ten per cent looks correct and assume the remaining ninety per cent is equally correct – the RAID controller may only have reached the ten per cent level and the rest of the drive could be blank or contain random characters, or a shadow of an earlier version of the drive. The challenge is to identify every deviation as the RAID is reconstructed. Experts in this field are relatively rare but some work in data recovery Scotland.

Software Protection Devices

Software suppliers have adopted a number of different systems to protect their products against illegal copying. The dongle (also written as ‘dongal’) is a user-friendly solution which acts a kind of ‘key’ plugged on to the printer port connector, sitting between the PC and the printer. In principle, the dongle is an acceptable and (usually) trouble-free solution. Once installed on the printer port, this electronic key becomes invisible to the user. In actual fact, the main program checks the presence of the dongle at certain intervals. If the device is found, the software simply continues to operate. If the dongle is not found at the expected location, the program stops functioning, and becomes useless. An additional advantage of a dongle is that it is a portable key. If you have it in your pocket, unauthorized use of the program (though fully installed) is just not possible. Depending on the licence conditions granted to the authorised user, it is possible to install the same software on a number of different computers. The software may be run on one machine at a time, however: the one with the dongle attached!

Attractive as they may be as software protection devices, dongles may cause unexpected problems. A practical problem reported to us by many users of dongles is that the printer appears to lock up the system if it is switched off. Yes, we know it may be switched on to prevent this sort of problem, but then electrical energy is wasted by a peripheral device which is not used. The following solution was devised: switch off the printer automatically, so that the dongle ‘thinks’ that it is the only device connected to the printer port, while the printer is not in use. In practice, the dongle switch described in this article automatically clears all printer-related problems reported by dongle users. Long live the practical approach to electronics!
